Bearing metal structures of industrial facilities are constantly exposed to aggressive influence of atmospheric precipitation but also of chemical substances released during the process, therefore only reliable anticorrosion protection guarantees their durability and design endurance characteristics. Qualitatively executed treatment provides protection from a number of harmful factors, among which is the influence of UV radiation, aggressive chemical environment, high humidity, sudden temperature changes, etc.

Aggressive environment, combined with high humidity (more than 70%) creates favorable conditions for the formation of rust, which not only worsens the aesthetic properties of metal structures, but also contributes to their gradual destruction. The places of joints and junctions are the most susceptible to corrosion, therefore their processing is carried out with special care.

The most effective protection against rust formation is provided by a two layer coating, in which the main (or active) layer, formed by the primer with some filler protects metal surfaces from moisture and aggressive substances, and the protective coating (passive)layer of enamel paint prevents it from destruction, at the same time having aesthetic functions.

Anticorrosion protection is performed in several stages.

Surface cleaning and preparation. At this stage, the metal is thoroughly cleaned from dust, dirt and rust to ensure maximum adhesion to the primer and to prevent it from peeling off. The best result is provided by means of sandblasting using pure quartz sand, which is supplied with an air stream. To clean separate areas are used steel brushes, grinding nozzles and other tools.

Degreasing and priming. Immediately after cleaning, the surface of the metal should be degreased, after that to cover it with primer coat. The most commonly used substances are red lead, zinc chromate or zinc powder. On metal structures, which are on the open air, the primer is applied in two layers (thickness must be 80 microns, not less).

Painting. The final stage is the coloring with enamel, which is applied after primer has dried completely. Enamel, used for painting, in its chemical composition should be compatible with the chosen primer. Tinting is performed at the temperature +5…+400C in dry weather. The enamel is applied in one layer (35…50micron).

In order to increase reliability of anticorrosive coating during operation, it is necessary to monitor its integrity, avoiding accidental damage, as well as accumulation of aggressive dust and dirt that can accumulate moisture and provoke gradual destruction of the paint layer.
